I thought Madeline was an incredible movie! Frances McDormand and Nigel Hawthorne were great together! The great cast includes Frances McDormand, Nigel Hawthorne, Hatty Jones, Ben Daniels, Arturo Venegas. If you love watching Frances McDormand or Nigel Hawthorne, you are definitely going to want to watch Madeline
The schoolgirl adventures of Madeline, a flame-haired orphan, are lovingly adapted from Ludwig Bemelmans’s classic children’s books. His sly and witty writing is transferred to this first-rate film, one that should not be thought of merely as childhood entertainment. Spunky Madeline is most adept at finding trouble. She is also a quick-witted and likable child who can solve almost any problem. Her latest scheme is to keep her school, which is also her home, from being sold by its owner, the recently widowed Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne). Unlike most youthful movie fare, this adventure boasts high production values that wisely include colorful Parisian locations. Hatty Jones is all spunky self-sufficiency and sweet innocence in the title role, and Frances McDormand is quite humorous as the stern school-mistress, Miss Clavel. –Rochelle O’Gorman
I just watched Orphans of the Storm… WOW what an incredible movie! Lillian Gish and Dorothy Gish were great together! The great cast includes Lillian Gish, Dorothy Gish, Joseph Schildkraut, Frank Losee, Katherine Emmet. If you love watching Lillian Gish or Dorothy Gish, you are definitely going to want to watch Orphans of the Storm
This is D.W. Griffith’s last great success, an epic melodrama from 1922 about two orphaned girls (real-life sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish) raised in the same house and tragically separated during the French Revolution’s infamous reign of terror. While this is no Birth of a Nation or Intolerance, it still reveals Griffith’s inimitable talent for spectacle and intimacy. Not surprisingly, it works best when focusing on the plight of the two sisters: Lillian is a peasant who cares for the blind Dorothy, a product of the deposed aristocracy. Orphans of the Storm is a film about intriguing pairings. Mingling with the upper class to help find Dorothy, Lillian falls in love with the handsome and compassionate Joseph Schildkraut (best known as Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank) and beguiles the influential Danton. Dorothy, meanwhile, is held captive by a family of gypsies, and is fought over by two brothers. Despite the lavish sets and Lillian’s stirring performance, the love stories and political tumult don’t quite mesh. But there are two magnificent moments emblematic of Griffith’s dual talents: When Lillian recognizes Dorothy’s plaintive voice outside her window and comes to her rescue, and the thrilling climax when Danton rescues Lillian from the guillotine. –Bill Desowitz

If you love watching Sam Rockwell or Peter Dinklage, you are definitely going to want to watch Nobody Wants Your Film
Director Peter Judson strings together a series of interviews and e-mails captured during the production of an independent feature film to tell this semi-fictionalized tale concerning the difficulties of getting distribution and the frustration, joy, banality, and passion of the filmmaking process. Interviews conducted with such independent film stalwarts as Steve Buscemi, Sam Rockwell, and Peter Dinklage - as well as conversations with such respected screen veterans as David Proval - offer an informative and absorbing glimpse into a side of the entertainment industry seldom seen by those not directly involved in the filmmaking process. In weighing the malaise of constant rejection against the importance of seeing a film through to completion, Judson offers both a cautionary tale of filmmaking and an abstract view of the process accompanied by surreal and often intoxicating imagery. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I just watched Knock Off… WOW what an incredible movie! Jean-Claude Van Damme and Rob Schneider were great together! The great cast includes Jean-Claude Van Damme, Rob Schneider, Lela Rochon, Paul Sorvino, Carman Lee. If you love watching Jean-Claude Van Damme or Rob Schneider, you are definitely going to want to watch Knock Off
Having based so much of his career on the films from the region, Jean Claude Van Damme heads to Hong Kong itself for Knock Off. Set in the 72 hours running up to the British handover to China (and released a mere year after the actual event), the film’s action centers around the colony’s thriving bootleg business, tied in with a rather convoluted plot concerning the CIA, Russian Mafia, and an attempt to hold the United States ransom through covert attacks. The opening section unwisely tries Van Damme’s hand at knockabout humor with partner Rob Schneider but merely proves that the star is severely lacking the sort of humorous touch that Arnold Schwarzenegger has so successfully utilized. Once Knock Off descends into more familiar Van Damme territory, the film–and its leading man–are on surer ground. There are a good deal of spectacular fight sequences, some amazing stunts, and a feisty female sparring partner in the form of Lela Rochen. Even the always-reliable Paul Sorvino pops up. Director Tsui Hark hits upon some interesting and initially invigorating visual effects but soon overdoes them, actually highlighting the lack of decent story rather than enhancing it. There is an incredible film to be made about this period in history but this isn’t it. Knock Off is merely another undemanding, high-kicking, high-octane vehicle for Van Damme. –Phil Udell
