Nine years ago, the moviegoing public bore witness to the emergence of two great new comic presences: Owen Wilson in Bottle Rocket, and Vince Vaughn in Swingers. Through the years, we’ve seen them paired off with a bunch of their friends and relatives for other movies, usually with Ben Stiller involved in some form or another. But these two have never been paired together. Until now….. Wedding Crashers finally has Wilson and Vaughn flying solo. Duo. Whatever. It’s a brilliant combination, and I fear that the reason we weren’t allowed to have this in the past was because we wouldn’t be ready for it. That or something lame about how they just needed the right material to truly unleash comic fury upon the masses. And unleash comic fury, they do. My God, they do. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know the set up. Wilson and Vaughn play John and Jeremy (respectively), two divorce mediators who crash various weddings in an effort to score with easily uninhibited women. The concept is brilliant and it makes me wonder why I never thought of it before. It’s genius. And it’s shown in such a fantastic extended montage, that had me giggling like an idiot.
The song “Shout” is finally used to as good effect as it was in Animal House. Anyway, the plot starts to thicken when John starts to have second thoughts about the whole scheme. Jeremy convinces him to go to one more wedding. It’s the wedding of Christopher Walken’s daughter. Walken is the head of something or another in Washington. It really doesn’t matter. All you need to know is that he’s powerful, could be the next president, loves sailing and other rich snobby activity, and has HOT daughters. They crash the wedding, and set their sights, as luck would have it, on the other two hot daughters of Walken. John for Claire (The oh so beautiful and talented Rachel McAdams, whom I may have to declare my undying love for, sorry Kate Winslet and Maggie Gyllenhaall) and Jeremy for Gloria (Isla Fisher, who I remember being hot in Scooby Doo a few years back.)
John begins to genuinely fall for Claire, who sadly has the requisite dickhole boyfriend. Whilst Jeremy manages to snare Gloria, who turns into a “Code 5 Clinger.” So, because of Gloria’s insistence (and subsequent freaky temper tantrum) the boys manage to get invited to the lovely estate of Walken’s family. Hijinks ensue. Will the truth come out? Will John get Claire away from the guy she shouldn’t be with? Will Jeremy finally get the crazy girl off his case? Do you need to ask these questions?
First things first: this movie is hilarious. Wet your pants hilarious. And most of it is courtesy of Vaughn. He’s got spectacular delivery. In the very beginning of the film, listen to his rant on dating. It’s delivered in what feels like one breath, it’s funny as hell, and it’s sadly true. The movie earns it’s R rating from Vaughn’s performance alone. I lost it at the line “I’m gonna go ice my balls and spit up blood.” Almost everything that comes out of Vaughn’s mouth is comic gold. If anything, see it for him. Pure id. Owen Wilson makes a good comic partner. He has the job of being the more sensitive of the duo, but he does good work. He still has that slacker charm, but it seems like he enjoys being in this film as opposed to some movies where he just coasts by. He gets a lot of good lines, but he works best off of Vaughn. I keep coming back to Vaughn, I’m sorry. The ladies.
Oh my, the ladies of this film. First off, there’s a lovely montage of the various girls duped by the wedding scheme. But then comes the two lovelies. Isla Fisher is very funny, and quite frightening, as the girl Jeremy deflowers on the beach, who becomes a little too needy. She’s quite sexually driven, and a little scary. Watch how quickly she switches gears in the bathroom scene tending to Vaughn’s football wounds. And now I come to Rachel McAdams. Oh my god. I can’t take my eyes off the screen when this girl shows up. When she smiles, I melt. There came a point in the film where I didn’t want her to to be with her yuppie boyfriend (who’s name is Sack, which makes the scatalogical side of me giggle like an idiot) OR Owen Wilson. I wanted her all for my own. I still do. Wow, I’m starting to scare myself here.
She has a stock character to play, but she plays it well, and is luminous. She should be cast in every movie. Every female lead should be played by her. EVER. Sorry about that. Christopher Walken actually plays it low key. That scares me more than anything. He’s not overly strange, and he doesn’t have any great monologue, like in True Romance or Pulp Fiction. He’s not even all that funny. But that’s not his character, and it’s a nice change of pace, even though his odd antics would have blended in perfectly with the film.
The movie has it’s problems. It runs a little too long, and with about a half hour left, it turns a little darker than it probably should have. (Although the token cameo is a bright spot). It loses a little steam, and the time compression becomes a little strange. But that didn’t stop me from having a great time. It’s nice to see funny movies that don’t hold back anymore. Every once in awhile we get a resurgence of these kind of movies (There’s Something About Mary, American Pie, Old School, etc.) and we need more of them. Anything that doesn’t water down the comedy for the sake of more teenagers’ expendable cash.
Between this and The 40 Year Old Virgin, this type of comedy is back. And thank the lord, it’s funny. Here’s hoping Vaughn and Wilson continue to pair up in comedies this funny. They deserve it. So go see it and enjoy. I’m gonna go ice my balls and spit up blood.
