DC Comics’ Batman has been linked to the original "bat man", Count Dracula, in a few capacities over the years.  Andy Warhol alluded to the connection in his unauthorized 1964 homage, Batman DraculaIn 1967, Batman Fights Dracula emerged in the Philippines.  In the comic book world, Batman has faced Dracula (albeit only in an alternate universe) in an Elseworlds series.  It seems people never tire of seeing the Dark Knight battle the Prince of Darkness.  Now in 2005, we have another reunion.  The Batman Vs. Dracula, a spin-off from the 2004 animated television series on the WB, "The Batman".   Released on October 18, 2005, it has been purely manufactured to coincide with the release of Batman Begins on DVD, while also trying to gain appeal to those looking for innocuous Halloween fare for the kiddies.

This animated adventure starts off with the escape of perennial nemeses Joker and Penguin from the Arkham Asylum.  Their nefarious schemes for riches get sidetracked when a drop of Penguin’s blood inadvertently brings the cadaver of Dracula to life.  Dracula uses his mind-altering powers to overwhelm Joker, Penguin, and a slew of other innocent victims in Gotham in an attempt to bring him back to prominence.  Due to their similar appearances, the mayhem that ensues is blamed on the Batman, so to clear his name and save the world from the ghoulish scourge, Bruce Wayne gets to work on trying to take the nearly invincible master of evil down.

I’ve only seen one episode of "The Batman", which is another Warner Brothers incarnation of the DC Comics hero, except in this series, Batman fights alone (no Robin, no Batgirl, etc.) and he has a "The" before his name.  It bored me, so I never watched it again.  Well, that is until this movie.  The results are the same here.  Trite dialogue, uninteresting confrontations, bland music, and very predictable plotting mars this entry.  The only hook here is the appearance of Dracula, which really doesn’t amount to a whole hell of a lot, especially since most other Batman villains are more colorful and interesting.  Contrivances abound to get the two titans of the bat together, but once the ground is set for the showdown, (The) Batman goes through predictable motions in order to try to defeat his foe (holy water, sunlight, etc.)

We know these characters through and through, so the fact that there are absolutely no new twists here shouldn’t come as a surprise. The voice work and animation are all competent, as you’d expect if you’ve seen the television series, and it is nicely presented in terms of the looks and sound effects.  Sadly, the story is a dog, compounded by some atrocious dialogue, making this uninteresting to anyone not already a die-hard Batman fanatic.  Batman fighting a supernatural bad-ass like Dracula should be a major event, but this entry remains undistinguished.  For less discriminating Bat-fans only.

Cave, The

Excrement- (ek-skre-ment) n. feces. Feces- (fee-seez) n. waste matter discharged from the bowels. The Cave- (the-cave) n. You can see where this joke is headed.

My, my, my. I know bad. I’ve seen bad. I subjected myself to the House of the Dead DVD several times (with commentary, because I had to hear what the hell they were thinking). House of the Dead is my high water mark of bad. The Cave doesn’t knock it out, but it’s a strong contender. Actually, that’s mean. Nothing is House of the Dead bad. But this is pretty bad. Same kind of bad, though. The kind of bad that invites some friends over and drinks a lot and MST3Ks the whole damn thing. It does possess a certain kitsch value. In fact, I think I might have to create a drinking game for this movie.

Follow the rules closely. Or don’t. It’s entirely up to you. TAKE A DRINK: Anytime a character screams another character’s name. TAKE A DRINK: When any character clearly states another’s character development arc. (ie. “She’s such a show off,” “He sure knows a lot about caves,” “His excessive hair growth is due to a berserk pituitary gland that accelerated at birth,” etc.) TAKE A DRINK: Anytime the phrase”Let’s get into the water” is spoken. TAKE A DRINK: When, after saying above phrase, said characters proceed to jump in the water. TAKE A DRINK: Whenever someone starts climbing. TAKE A DRINK: Whenever it fades to black. TAKE A DRINK: Whenever someone lights a flare. (Take another sip if the lighting of the flare is how the scene begins after the previous scene faded to black). TAKE 2 DRINKS: Whenever Piper Perabo delivers a line with utmost stupidity. TAKE 3 DRINKS (or finish drink you have on you): When Piper Perabo screams. (Once you’ve stopped laughing). TAKE A DRINK: When you’re suddenly reminded of Pitch Black. DO A SHOT: When you realize how much better Pitch Black is than this, and suddenly decide you’d rather be watching that. TAKE A DRINK: When even YOU can’t make sense of what the hell’s going on. (although, at this point, you might want to make it water. You’ve been drinking all night, rummy). Ok, so you might get the point.

Obviously, a movie like the Cave is not going to be Schindler’s List, and thank god it doesn’t even try. But still, a little bit of coherence would have been appreciated. Something to make this movie an almost crap-tacular experience. I think that’s what upsets me the most about the movie, was that it could have been something so much more fun, and something way cooler, and it just isn’t. The story isn’t nearly as easy to describe as, say, SNAKES ON A PLANE! The Cave is kind of a generic title, which is good because it’s a generic movie.

Bunch of “Expert Divers” get called in to explore a cave. (title). once in said cave, things happen, what they are I’m not too clear on. Anyway, they suddenly can’t go out the way they came, so they decide to find a new way out. And there’s something in the cave with them. A creature. Or many creatures. After that the feasting begins, and tensions flare. To be honest, there’s nothing in this movie you haven’t seen in a better movie. The script is pretty lame. And the ad doesn’t even tell you what’s really going on. Oh, and the movie doesn’t have that Pitch Black-esque shot of Cole Hauser lighting a flare and a bunch of creatures are over him. Don’t know where that went. Maybe I missed it because I was too busy thinking about other things.

The acting is pretty bad, although Cole Hauser does a decent job. Even though there are parts when he seems to be trying out as a zombie in Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. (Looks, and acting range, almost as if Cole Hauser suddenly realized that he was ripping off a movie that was much better THAT HE WAS IN!!!) And Morris Chestnut isn’t half bad, but then again, he doesn’t have much to say. Everyone else is pretty wooden, and seems to be there only to provide fodder. The special effects are pretty damn good, it must be said. A few obvious CG bits aside, the things that are in said titular cave are pretty cool. Sure they’re nothing new, but they’re fun creatures. Kudos to Patrick Tatopolous. I always like his work. And the score isn’t half bad. It’s the same guys who did Land of the Dead, and Run Lola Run. (those were much better scores, though. Maybe because those didn’t rip off Jaws). There’s also some nice underwater photography. In fact, there’s a LOT of underwater photography.

I was reminded of another MST3K bit while watching this. The robots are watching a movie (as they do) and there’s a whole lot of shots of an RV driving. Tom Servo (the gumball machine robot) says “Look, we paid for the RV, we’re gonna FILM the RV!” I kept shouting “We paid for the underwater camera, we’re gonna FILM UNDERWATER!!” But there are a lot of fade to blacks. Even more than Blood Deep (and that had a lot). And there’s no real sense of geography in the film, and that bugged me a lot. Now I’m just nitpicking, I realize, but still. There’s no tension for me unless I know exactly where they are. Suddenly, they’ll be in a different chamber, and the Predators will show up, while the Aliens are…wait, wrong better movie. Wow. If I’m thinking AVP is better, we know there’s a problem. So, as you can tell, I highly recommend the movie.

Sure, the movie I’m recommending is Pitch Black, but still. Remind yourself that you can watch a better movie that strives to rise above the material and have some fun, instead of just using the underwater camera just because you have it. Oh, and if you do decide to play the drinking game, please be careful. (And do it legally. No underage drinking, and no driving afterwards. And if you sneak it in the theater, mix it in an ICEE cup. Just kidding. There’s my CYA statement). You will get sloppy as hell. And them maybe you can tell me what the hell was going on with the end?

Cold Creek Manor (2003) / Thriller-Drama

MPAA Rated: R for violence, language, and some sexuality Running Time: 118 min.

Cast: Dennis Quaid, Sharon Stone, Stephen Dorff, Juliette Lewis, Dana Eskelson, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Wilson, Christopher Plummer Director:  Mike Figgis Screenplay: Richard Jefferies

Back in 1992, screenwriter Richard Jefferies wrote the screenplay for a little known comedy-horror atrocity called The Vagrant, which was about a man who buys a new house only to be terrorized by a local homeless man, and no matter how much he tries to convince others of his situation, signs point to himself as a paranoid freak or the culprit of the misdeedsBy the time of its release, The Vagrant was already a few years to late to find its audience, as the urban nightmare thrillers were on the way out.  Now it’s 11 years later, and here’s another thriller by Jefferies, and get this…it’s about a man who buys a house in the country only to have himself and his family terrorized by the former tenant of the estate, and no matter how much he tries to convince others of the situation, he is seen as a paranoid freak or the culprit of the misdeeds.

Granted, this is a better film in terms of quality, with a higher budget and more credible actors.  However, what the producers of Cold Creek Manor have failed to realize is that the domestic thriller genre needs a new twist if you’re going to make it nowadays.  Today’s audience grew up with these films in the late 80s, and are too savvy to deal with the "same old same old" family under siege.

The movie starts off with Quaid and Stone moving the kids to the country because they are fed up with New York City life.  With banks foreclosing on homes and selling them at cut-rate prices, they land a sure deal with a little out-of-the-way place called Cold Creek Manor.  It’s a large estate, but clearly, renovations are in order.  Soon after moving in, they receive an unwelcome visitor in the form of Stephen Dorff, who apparently had been the previous occupant of the family manor, and just recently let go from prison, he makes a deal with Quaid to help fix up the place.  However, the house has a history, and the more Quaid digs into it, the stranger the occurrences that threaten his family, and soon tension between himself and Dorff sends tensions escalating.

Sure, there is a competent cast here, and Figgis is a very good director when he wants to be, but the material just isn’t worthy of their talents.  Chock full of trite clich?s, you can spot the twists and turns occurring long before the characters do, and we can only sit and watch in impatient agony as the predictable events unfold.

There’s not much else to say other than this is a completely derivative film, a mix of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Kalifornia (which also saw Lewis as a victimized girlfriend of a similar abusive white-trash boyfriend).  Unless you just love seeing families being terrorized, I can’t think of any reason why anyone should watch a film so bereft of original ideas.  Now that we’ve seen him try twice and fail miserably, let’s all hope Richard Jefferies doesn’t think the third time must be the charm.

"Cancel my reservation" (Total Crap)

Abel Ferrara, the loose cannon director behind such fare as "Ms. .45" and "Bad Lieutenant" finally finds time to make his worst film.Based on a William Gibson short story, X (Willem Dafoe) and Fox (Christopher Walken) are hired to lure scientist Hiroshi (Yoshitaka Amano) from one giant corporation to another. Promised one hundred million dollars, the duo hire Sandii (Asia Argento) to seduce Hiroshi from his wife and job, and take up with the competition. To complicate matters, X and Sandii begin having feelings for one another while the physically handicapped Fox can only look on from the sidelines, perhaps jealous of the both of them. Sandii succeeds in her endeavor, but things go awry when someone murders Hiroshi and his coworkers, and Sandii disappears. X then begins tracing his memories of his time with Sandii to find out what happened, and Fox meets an untimely end.Believe me, the plot summary is the most exciting thing about this dull film. Not many can accuse Ferrara of making something boring, but he does here. The film opens and immediately the viewer will think they came in on the middle of the story. For most of the first third of the film, I had no idea what was going on. I watched, even took notes, but Ferrara refuses to let his audience in on the plot. As I deciphered what was going on, the plot lurches forward until the final quarter of the film. X is now a resident of the title hotel, one of those Japanese hotels where everyone sleeps in tiny cubby holes. Then, and I am not exaggerating, Ferrara then spends at least twenty minutes in flashback to the first hour of the film. If it did not make sense the first time around, it sure won’t with the flashback. Ferrara shows us important clues that X should have caught, knowing Sandii may not be all that she was. Do you know what? The audience sort of figures this out anyway, especially with a cast this small. The flashback is really a padded, tacked on sequence. It is as if Ferrara knew he had nothing here, and wanted to use some smoke and mirrors to boost the comprehension level. It does not work.Walken and Dafoe are okay, they are not given enough characterization. They do improvise plenty, what else can you do with these shallow parts? Asia Argento is simply yummy as the call girl. It is sad, though, that Dafoe tries to ad lib with her, and the Italian-born Argento gamely sticks to the script, trying to say her line as Dafoe plays with his dialogue. Annabella Sciorra has a cameo that makes no sense, as does famed Japanese composer and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto.Usually Ferrara’s work earns a cult following, but I had never heard of this film until I saw it on the video rental shelf. It is so bad, there are no critics’ sound bites on the box, trying to make this sound better than it is. Throw in underwhelmingly cheap special effects, and Ferrara’s silly video camera surveillance shots, and "New Rose Hotel" is one loser of a film.I recommend this to Ferrara fans, and insomniacs.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that the movie looks full of obscenely ridiculous action sequences that would kick unholy amounts of arse. The movie is a two hour, R-rated version of that trailer. It inspires many an exagerrated obscene comment, but it’s completely deserving in doing so. 300 is adapted from the graphic novel by Frank Miller.

It tells the story of the 300 Spartan warriors led by their bad ass King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), as they stand up against the tens of thousands of Persians awaiting to conquer and absorb Sparta into the empire. The Persians are lead by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), who figures himself a god among men. And the movie is about their battle. Sure, there’s a fair amount of political intrigue amongst the Queen (Lena Headey, who is quite yummy) and a traitor among the Sparta elite (Dominic West), but really the movie is about the battle, which is a technically accomplished series of fight scenes like I have yet to see before. Seriously. You’ll want to compare them to scenes from Lord of the Rings or Gladiator, but you’d be wrong. Oh my, you will be wrong. One example would be the long, unbroken shot of Leonidas fighting in the first battle, the one that doesn’t cut and keeps speeding up and slowing down, was quite invigorating, and a stand out among many great epic battle sequences.

Jaw dropping, and I might even be so inclined to say awe inspiring, battle sequences. The visuals themselves, even when not involving bloodshed or carnage, are a sight to behold. Much like the previous Miller adaptation Sin City, 300 was made with generous help from all digital environments. I don’t know how faithful the film is to the graphic novel, but I can say that it looks damn fine, like the novel had come to life. Although what I viewed tonight was a workprint, most of the effects and digital rendering had been completed, and it never looked obnoxiously fake at all. It’s a beautiful looking movie. The actors do well for their roles, with Gerard Butler as a very convincing badass leader, even though he doesn’t need to keep shouting everything as if it were a grand statement. But you know what? It doesn’t matter because I’d follow him into battle any day.

Mainly because I know that he could pretty much single-handedly take care of everyone for me, but he’d know I have his back. Zach Snyder, he of Dawn of the Dead (’04) fame, directs 300 with a sure hand, telling a rock solid tale of honor and valor and mostly about kicking ass. Looking back upon the film, I’m starting to pick up on some themes that are a little freaky if you stop to think about them. (Spartans discard imperfect babies, so as to keep their army full of the strongest. This leads one to realize that the Spartans are kind of creating their own master race. And when you think of creating a master race, Nazis also come to mind. And yet, we the viewer are supposed to identify and support these Nazis. These superior soldiers who, by the way, all kind of look like He-Man action figures, and made me feel inadequate about myself.)

There is a lot one can take away from this film. But purely on a knee-jerk visceral level, it’s going to be very hard to top this movie. It’s an adrenaline shot to your standard epic film. It packs a lot of testosterone into a two hour gap, but when compared to the bloated epics of late (Troy, Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven), it’s quite refreshing. I don’t know if I can keep lavishing praise on this film. I know this much, I can’t wait to see it again. It’s nice to see a movie that’s not afraid to do new things while at the same time telling a solid story. A story of fighting. A lot of fighting. A hell of a lot of fighting, but done so well, and in such a damn good looking movie. It’s a movie that makes you excited about movies again. Hell, it reduced me to obscene fan-boy gushing like I lost my virginity or solved the world’s economic crises, full of hyperbole and nonsensical ramblings. That’s what this movie does!!! 300 is one hell of a film.

Features: Widescreen Letterboxed - 1.85:1. English (Dolby Digital 5.1). Subtitles: English, Spanish, French. Commentary by director Oliver Stone. Production notes. Theatrical trailer. Over an hour of haunting bonus footage, extra scenes and lost performances. Behind-the-Scenes Making-Of NBK.

The Movie:
First of all, if you’ve seen Natural Born Killers you already know if you’re going to buy this DVD. Stone’s film so polarized the viewing public that nothing I say here will sway your opinion (if you already have one.) Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, on to the review!

Natural Born Killers is the story of a modern day Bonnie and Clyde who venture across the country on a killing spree, becoming worldwide celebrities in the process. The lead rolls are played with great aplomb by Woody Harrelson (in his first major roll after the Cheers) and Juliette Lewis who bring these most loathsome characters to life. Unfortunately, their performances don’t seem to be able to save this muddled film.

Stone’s basic thesis is that the American obsession with crime, fed by an over exuberant media, has fostered an atmosphere in which violence itself is a valid form of expression. That’s a message that should ring true for many people but Stone’s ham-handed delivery gets in the way. His stance is so clear that unless you fall asleep in the first five minutes you won’t fail to miss it. Natural Born Killers is intended to be a satire but the subject matter is used as a bludgeon leaving little room for levity. In my estimation Stone fails to give his audience credit for being intelligent enough to draw their own conclusion and instead opts to force his message down their throats.

Compounding the problem is Stone’s schizophrenic use of the film medium itself. From the get go he switches relentlessly back and forth between black and white, 16mm, 8mm and video leaving little chance for the viewer to settle into the flow. He presents us with rear screen projections, blue screen mats, full-fledged CGI and even imagery projected on buildings. I couldn’t help getting the feeling that Stone was trying broadcast on whatever frequency David Lynch seems to be tuned into and failing miserably.

Nevertheless I was able to enjoy some aspects of the film. Quentin Tarantino originally scripted Natural Born Killers (though it went through many other hands before shooting began) and there are moments when his clever dialogue shines through. In addition I found the performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Tommy Lee Jones to be very funny and well crafted.

The Picture:
Because of the frenetic cutting between various media it’s a little hard to get a handle on the overall video quality. Some of the scenes are intentionally grainy and others look washed out. Still others make use of fog filters and postproduction effects. After accounting for this intentional mish mash it seems to me that the picture quality is very good. The color levels are pleasant and not over saturated, the skin tones are right on and the black and white footage seems crisp and clean. I was unable to detect any appreciable artifacts from the DVD compression process.

The Sound:
Natural Born Killers sports a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track but it was a bit of a disappointment. I found the soundfield to be somewhat flat and not very broad. The surrounds came into play on only the most rare of occasions which is a shame considering all the action on screen. The LFE channel gets a workout with gunfire and explosions but it’s left hanging out to dry without the support of a better overall mix.

The Extras:
There are several extras on this disc. First of all there’s a short documentary on the making of Natural Born Killers and the controversy it caused. This production is a softball effort that only scratches the surface of the story behind the film. Next there’s a screen specific audio commentary track by Stone. This too is a little disappointing. Stone spends way too much time explaining his message and not enough discussing the production and the differences between this director’s cut and the MPAA approved R rated version. Several cut scenes are included, each with an optional introduction by the director. This is the most insightful extra as it shows how the film evolved in postproduction. There’s also an interesting alternate ending. Finally you’ll find the original theatrical trailer and several bonus trailers from other Trimark releases.

Conclusion:
Natural Born Killers probably sparked more controversy than was justified by the content of the film. It’s far from the bloodiest or the most offensive movie you’ll ever see but it certainly isn’t for everyone. If you’re a Stone fan you’ll want this one in your collection and if you saw it in the theater and liked it you’ll probably get a kick out of the feature packed DVD. If you’ve never seen the film before I recommend that you rent it first and see if it’s to your liking.

"As does this movie." (Total Crap)

Mel Brooks tries to be Chaplin, both as actor and as writer-director, and the result is bad Mel Brooks.Brooks’ only good moments here come early, when ? as the rotten billionaire Goddard Bolt ? he’s amusingly lofty and disdainful, with his dinky mustache and predator hairpiece; we almost expect him to reprise his line "It’s good to be the king." After Brooks is stripped of these accoutrements as part of a bet (he has to survive on the streets without money for a month), the movie slackens, and not much later it dies; you hardly sense its passing. The newly scraggly Brooks falls in love with a beautiful bag lady (Lesley Ann Warren, in an awful performance), who seems to have mood teeth ? they sometimes alternate between yellow and white within the same scene. In the film’s masterstroke of fatuity, the lovers twirl in an elaborate song-and-dance number ? and it isn’t played as parody. Nothing is, really.Life Stinks was part of the ceaseless summer-of-1991 glut of redemption movies (see also Regarding Henry and The Doctor), and those of us who had faith in Brooks’ irreverent sensibility and hoped he would turn this stupid subgenre on its head were profoundly disappointed ? it’s pretty much a straight redemption movie. What’s worse, Brooks seemed to have lost even a basic grasp of comedy. About 90% of the jokes elicit blank, polite stares, not laughs. The film is as raggedy and forlorn as its hero.Perhaps because of its suicidally unappealing ad campaign (and its title), the movie bombed. A solid cast of back-up comedians (Stuart Pankin, Howard Morris, Billy Barty, the mighty Jeffrey Tambor) do what they can.

ABC-TV is commended for their top notch attitude and efforts in this
mini-series. So many projects have turned out to be just a mockery; but this
presentation gives a interesting look at the life and legend of one of the
world’s most beloved entertainers. The series was canceled a few episodes
before its scheduled conclusion; but this had nothing to do with the quality
of the project in toto.

A lot of myth is not dispelled, but it gives even the non Elvis fan a look
at the raw beginnings of a major superstar’s career. As for true blue Elvis
fans, only minor complaints. Namely some of the characters names and places
and events are not totally accurate. This is probably due to legal
reasons.

Michael St. Gerard is second only to Kurt Russell in physically presenting
the essence of Elvis. The uncanny resemblance, mannerisms and total look is
terrific. Kudos to St. Gerard for his achievement and successful role as
Elvis.

Veteran actor Billy Green Bush plays a more animated Vernon Presley. Millie
Perkins, who co-starred with Elvis in WILD IN THE COUNTRY(61),plays Gladys
Presley. Jordan Williams is the most often arrogant record producer Sam
Phillips. Jesse Dabson plays Scotty Moore, one of the major contributors to
Elvis‘ early sound. Blake Gibbons plays the hot tempered and easily
disgruntled stand-up base player Bill Black.

St. Gerard lip synchs to the voice of country singer Ronnie McDowell, who
has been used several times as the singing voice of Elvis. Your time will
not be wasted watching this look at the meager beginnings of the dynamic,
unequaled career of the more than legendary Elvis Presley.

Adventures of Pluto Nash, The Reviewed By Scott Weinberg Posted 02/02/03 14:18:34

"Yes, it’s bad, but gimme a BREAK! I see 20 movies a year that are worse!" (Average)

There’s nothing that pisses a movie critic off like a film unscreened for the press. Obviously one can assume such a flick is NOT supported confidently by its studio, so the buzzards start flying with amazing predictability. Nothing’s as delicious as an easy target. The Adventures of Pluto Nash is NOT a particularly good movie, but I suspect most critics were more interested in the expansive budget than the flick’s few (but clearly noticeable) assets. This is one weird flick. It’s slick and colorful, yet it’s also clumsy and essentially devoid of solid laughs. It features an eclectic cast of supporting players, though it gives them very little to do. A few segments seem surprisingly inspired, while many more just lie there listless. It’s got the crisp visual palette of a very expensive kid’s flick, but there’s also an odd devotion to intermittently leering sex humor. The Adventures of Pluto Nash is clumsy, sloppily edited, and completely schizophrenic. It’s also paced quite breezily, the special effects are flashy and satisfying, the production design is completely cool, and lead Eddie Murphy delivers an enjoyably laid-back performance.Surely I can see why so few critics like this one, but c’mon! There’s no WAY this is any worse than most of the mega-grossing FX spectacles we’re given every freakin’ summer. Again, I just think this bizarre misfire offered too simple a whipping boy, and Warner Bros. certainly didn’t do anything to help the film’s chances. The plot is convoluted and simplistic at the same time: all you need know is that Pluto Nash is a club-owner on the run after the Moon mafia blows his business sky high. Toss in ten or twelve familiar faces, a handful of awkward-yet-flashy action sequences, and a kickin’ goofball musical score, and you have a movie that any 14-year-old boy could love.Which I assume is why I sorta enjoyed big chunks of this movie: Jay Mohr only has a few scenes, but each one offers at least two solid laughs. (I can read them back to you if you like.) Randy Quaid delivers one of the universe’s truly arcane acting performances as security robot Bruno. I can’t tell if Quaid’s on his game, or if he’s offering the worst performance of his career - but the character is pretty amusing so no harm, no foul.Like many of you, I love to rent the mega-dogs to see how bad they truly are. As far as Rollerball and Battlefield Earth go, I’m in accord with the planet: these movies are the pinnacle of suck. But we gotta part company on The Adventures of Pluto Nash, a movie that’s clearly a big sloppy mess - but there’s no way it deserved such a horrific thrashing while so many other deserving dungheaps get left off the hook.Kinda sad that this endearingly strange flick will be remembered as one of the "worst ever", yet XXX is considered a good movie because it was profitable.I’m not really surprised that this one tickled me a bit: I’m a longtime fan of Eddie Murphy, I had the lowest possible expectations going in, and the flick’s just so resoundingly WEIRD that it easily held my interest. (And for the record: Ishtar is not really all that awful either.)

Remakes are probably one of the hardest things to do in cinema. A precedent is already set, and in Fist of Fury’s case, it was first done by a legend, Bruce Lee, then successfully retold by Jet Li. So Donnie Yen’s 1995 attempt makes a third stab at telling the story.

Since it is such an already well known story, I wont go into much detail about it. Suffice to say, if you are reading this and haven’t seen either the Bruce Lee or Jet Li versions of this story (Fist if Fury, aka. in the US Chinese Connection and Fist of Legend, respectively), then please see them first. But, for those that don’t know or need a refresher, the basic story is- 1930’s Shanghai. Martial arts student Jun Chen returns home to find turmoil. The Japanese are in control and their martial schools have begun to usurp the Chinese schools. Jun Chens’s master tries to rally the Chinese schools together, and in his efforts to prove Chinese styles superiority (the Japanese call them the “Sick Men of Asia”), he is poisoned and killed by the Japanese. As they further plot to dominate the Chinese martial world and destroy the spirit of his people, divided by his love for a Japanese girl, Yumi, and his hatred for the atrocities committed against his culture, Jun Chen soon wages an almost one man war against the Japanese.

Now, with two legendary films of the same story already existing, how do you make it different, justify telling the same story again? Previously, I thought Jet Li was crazy for remaking a Bruce Lee film, but of course, he triumphed in making one of the greatest modern martial arts films, Fist of Legend. So, it is a mammoth uphill battle to try for a third time. In this versions case, they took the idea and decided to do it as a 30 hour tv series, the first half dealing with the backstory we never saw, and the last part being a retelling of the film version we kung fu fans know so well. However, that is the crux of one of the problems I have with this edition. This edition is a 2 hour cut, condensing the last half of the series, the story we already know, so we don’t get that unique glimpse into the characters backstory. Releasing a condensed version is smart, because, in America at least, not many people are going to want to pay for and sit through 30 hours of low budget tv. But for the cult audience of Asian afficianados, its may be annoying that with this version you only get a small hint of the changes and know you are missing out on the whole story. I was just hoping for a little more backstory, and would probably like and extra 30 mins added at the beginning so I could see some of it.

Quite frankly, the problems hinge on the fact that the series was made in a fourth of the time and probably 1/25th of the budget that American tv viewers are accustomed to. It is that culture shock problem, if I wasnt raised in the US with US tv standards in production and acting, I may love this series. The cast is all solid, and (at least in this version) the editing is kept at a brisk pace, keeping the story moving. But, it is all so cheap. Despite some good sets, locations, and occasional scenes of atmospheric shots, it is hindered by the limited scope of the production. No doubt stretched to its fullest extent, the lack of true time and budget for the action, actors, and filming makes this production nothing more than of novelty interest to really die hard kung fu/martial afficianados.

The thing about being a Donnie Yen fan, no matter how much you love him (like I do), the sour fact is that he never really took off as a huge star or solo talent. In the industry and with fans, he has respect, has charisma, and certainly has talent on par with any of the top names in martial films, from Jet Li, to Yuen Biao, to Jackie. But, I think getting his start in the age when martial films were dying, when the true martial stars began to fade and fighting just became an element in any kind of action film, as opposed to a genre in and of itself, he never saw the chance to be a huge star. His resume is a nice blend of genres, from one of the last old school films- Drunken Tai Chi, to cop action- In the Line of Duty 4, Tiger Cage, to fantasy swordplay- Dragon Inn, Comet Butterfly and Sword to new wave, wire fu period fighting- Wing Chun, Once Upon a Time In China 2, Iron Monkey, but in these films, his best work, he was usually a co-star or shared billing with other stars. And, his directorial efforts like Legend of the Wolf and Ballistic Kiss are really nothing more than entertaining b-pictures. Likewise, this Fists of Fury tv series really does fall short as a Donnie Yen showcase. Although he did the fight choreography, the limited budget never allows him to do much, sometimes having to choreograph and shoot an elaborate fight scene in one night, with non martial actors and limited stuntmen. The fights are so sped up and awkwardly shot, it is often very laughable, and not the best example of this talents. While he does try to pay more of tribute to Lee than Jet Li did, aping Lee’s stances, vocalizations, and some dialogue, it is admirable but still not enough to save the show from its overall clumsiness- no doubt all the more clumsy due to this version being an edited one.

The DVD- Tai Seng DVD. Not a terrific adaptation, but the DVD is actually a surprising treat due to a great commentary track.

The Picture- Basically fullscreen, tape (BETA, thank you D Yen commentary). The transfer does fine with the materials provided, but what is provided just doesn’t look that great. I think it is safe to say, mid 90’s HK television is on par/worse than an early 1970’s Doctor Who episode. We have infomercails that look better. Hell, I’ve got home videos that look better. But, as far as I could tell, the transfer is glitch and artifact free, gaining it major points. Just be forewarned, it looks as good as it can but HK tv is pretty darn cheap.

Sound- Dolby Digital 5.1 Cantonese or English dub tracks with optional yellow English subtitles. Very good audio tracks. While pretty straightforward and a little hollow, what they lack in dynamics they make up for in simple clarity. The sound fx is pretty generic and one assumes most of the dialouge was dubbed. Its fine but, once again, it is a low budget tv production, so don’t expect outstanding score or fx.

Extras- Chapter selections— Tai Seng Trailers for Bullets of Love, Assassin, The Duel, Cop on a Mission, Fist Power, Deadful Melody, Dragon Inn, and Fists of Fury— Donnie Yen Filmography— Making Of behind the scenes featurette. This 21 ? min promo for the series features various soundbites from the production crew, and Yen in the gym, but mainly it has several scenes from the film and montages that let us see some of what we have missed in this condensed version, including early plotting and fight scenes. As a matter of fact, the fight scenes in this featurette look better than the scenes in the movie, so it is a welcome addition.— Commentary tracks. Track one) Donnie Yen and Dr. Craig Reed. Donnie Yen commentary is immense fun. He is extremely affable and very easily slides into talking about the project and is upfront about its limitations. He discusses the pressure and time constraint he was under, having to choreograph a fights on the spot, with so-so stuntmen, and finish it in a matter of hours (which leads to a great anecdote about the infamous padded down Bey Logan fight we see in the film). He even mentions how it was an oversight on his part, not realizing the undercranking/speeding up of BETA would be different form film undercranking and would make the fights look too fast. And, no one is spared as Donnie amusingly points out the melodrama, bad acting in scenes of co-stars as well as himself. At the end of the track, he jokes that maybe the commentary will be the DVDs main selling point, but, no joke, with his laid back yet informative, fun comments, he is right. Track 2) features Dr. Craig Reed again (who is this guy?), Tai Seng product manager Frank Djeng, and martial artist film star Robin Shou. While Donnie’s track is mainly anecdotes about the production and thoughts on Bruce Lee, this track delves into the stars and the history behind the story. It too, is lighthearted and fun, but unfortunately is hampered by technical difficulties, the track is full of hiss, and the low volume commentary struggles against the film soundtrack. It is a good thing there are two tracks, because, although still listenable, the second commentary is so annoyingly distorted it was a struggle to sit through.

Conclusion- Well, this version of Fists of Fury while ambitious in its scope, is hampered by limited HK tv budget and general melodrama. A curiosity for HK and Donnie Yen fans, luckily the DVD, although a condensed version of the series, does offer good extras, particularly the featurette and the Donnie Yen commentary that make it worthwhile for those die-hard completists out there. Otherwise, I would say it is best to approach with caution and maybe give it a rental first.
